Hoist Wire Rope Knowledge-You Need To know

Released on Jul. 17, 2025

As we all know, the electric wire rope hoist is widely used in construction sites, factories, warehouses, and other similar applications. Most importantly, the quality of the wire rope will influence the service life of wire rope electric hoists. To provide more professional service, we summarized some usage precautions for your reference.

Steel Wire Rope Usage Precautions

1. When pulling steel wire rope from a reel or wire rope coil, it should be prevented from looping, twisting, bending, or sticking to debris. When cutting the steel wire rope, it should be firmly tied with fine steel wire on both sides of the cut to prevent the strands from loosening after the cut. Safety inspections and checks at the rope ends should pay attention to: the segment of steel wire rope extending from the fixed connection end that is fatigued or corroded is extremely dangerous; whether the fixing device is deformed or worn, whether the end rope clamp has cracks, and whether there is sliding between the clamp and the wire rope

2. Internal and removable wedge joints, rope clips, and plates should be inspected for broken strands and corrosion; check whether the webbed loop socket ends have protruding steel wires that could injure hands. When replacing steel wire rope, the crane operator should conduct a comprehensive inspection of all visible parts of the steel wire rope daily, including observing for any damage or deformation on second-hand bulldozers, and perform a safety check once a month. When the steel wire rope rubs against certain parts of the machine, protective measures should be implemented at the contact points. When the binding rope contacts the edges of the load, wooden pads or copper plates should be added to the edges to prevent the steel wire from being cut.

3. If there are significant broken strands or corrosion, the steel wire rope may be shortened and reattached to the rope end fixing device, but the length of the steel wire rope should satisfy the requirement of being wrapped around the reel at least 3 times. Under normal working conditions, the steel wire rope will not suddenly break, but with the increase of wear and fatigue, breaking incidents can occur. Key inspection points include: the ends of the moving and fixed steel wire rope; the section of rope passing or winding around the pulley group; the section of rope for the balancing pulley; the section of rope that may cause wear against a part of the machine; sections of rope with corrosion or fatigued areas.

4. An overload limiter or torque limiter should be installed, and sudden impact vibrations during use should be minimized. The most effective measures for daily maintenance are frequent inspections, cleaning of used steel wire ropes, and application of lubricating oil (grease); when rust appears or a large amount of dirt accumulates, it should be removed and cleaned; preferably, the cleaned steel wire rope should be wound and soaked in lubricating oil (grease) of 80-100 for saturation (soaking the rope core). If the dirt on the steel wire rope is not excessive, lubricating oil can be applied to sections of rope that contact the pulley, reel, and rope end fixing points. The rope groove of the reel or pulley should be regularly cleaned of dirt, and if there is any damage, overload lifting is strictly prohibited. The grader should be adjusted or replaced promptly.
